Ingredients
Scale
Sandwich Base
- 4 sandwich rolls or buns (preferably soft, like brioche or Kaiser rolls)
- 1 tablespoon butter (for toasting the buns)
- Lettuce
- Tomato slices
- Pickles
Mushroom Mixture
- 1 lb fresh mushrooms (cremini or white button), sliced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Protein (optional)
- 1/2 lb beef patties, chicken breasts, or turkey patties
- Salt and pepper to taste
Cheese and Garnish
- 8 slices Swiss cheese
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Cook the Mushrooms: Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook, stirring occasionally, until they soften and release their moisture, about 7-10 minutes. Season with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Set aside.
- Cook the Protein (if using): If using beef patties, chicken breasts, or turkey patties, season them with salt and pepper. Cook on medium-high heat for about 4-5 minutes per side for beef burgers until desired doneness, or until chicken or turkey reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
- Toast the Buns: While the protein cooks, spread butter on the cut sides of the sandwich buns. Toast them on a skillet or in a toaster oven until golden and crispy.
- Assemble the Sandwiches: Place the cooked protein on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Layer a generous amount of sautéed mushrooms on top, followed by two slices of Swiss cheese per sandwich.
- Melt the Cheese: Place the assembled sandwiches under a broiler or in a microwave for 30 seconds, just until the Swiss cheese melts and becomes gooey.
- Serve: Top with fresh lettuce, tomato slices, or pickles as desired. Garnish with fresh parsley for an added touch of color and flavor.
Notes
- If you prefer a vegetarian version, omit the protein and double the mushrooms for extra filling.
- Variations can include adding caramelized onions or sautéed spinach for added flavor.
- Use brioche buns for a richer, slightly sweet flavor that complements the savory mushrooms and cheese.
- Ensure not to overcook the mushrooms to keep them tender and juicy.
- Swiss cheese can be substituted with Gruyère or provolone for a different taste experience.
