Ingredients
Scale
Meat and Vegetables
- 1 pound sausage
- 2 cups diced apples
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cups celery, chopped
Other Ingredients
- 8 cups bread cubes
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1 teaspoon sage
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the stuffing.
- Brown the sausage: Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook the sausage until it’s browned and cooked through, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks.
- Sauté onions and celery: Add the chopped onions and celery to the skillet with the sausage and continue cooking until the vegetables are soft and fragrant, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add diced apples: Stir in the diced apples and cook the mixture for another 2 minutes to slightly soften the apples and meld the flavors.
- Combine bread cubes and sausage mixture: Transfer the sausage-apple-vegetable mixture into a large bowl and add the bread cubes, mixing everything together thoroughly.
- Add chicken broth: Pour in the chicken broth gradually while stirring to moisten the bread mixture evenly without making it soggy.
- Season: Sprinkle in the sage, thyme, salt, and pepper, then stir well to distribute the herbs and seasoning throughout the mixture.
- Prepare for baking: Transfer the stuffing mixture into a baking dish and cover it tightly with aluminum foil to maintain moisture while baking.
- Bake the stuffing: Bake covered in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake an additional 15 minutes to brown the top and crisp the edges.
Notes
- You can use any type of sausage you prefer: mild, spicy, or even a poultry sausage for a lighter option.
- Day-old bread works best for bread cubes to avoid sogginess, but fresh bread can be used if dried beforehand.
- If you like extra moisture, add a little more chicken broth, but be careful not to make the stuffing too wet.
- Fresh herbs provide the best flavor, but dried sage and thyme work well too.
- Feel free to add nuts like pecans or walnuts for extra crunch and flavor.
