Description

This Perfect Buttercream recipe creates a smooth, creamy, and fluffy frosting ideal for cakes, cupcakes, and cookies. Made with simple ingredients like unsalted butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract, it is easy to prepare and customizable with different flavors. Its light texture makes it perfect for piping as well as spreading.

Ingredients

Scale

Buttercream Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened to room temperature)
  • 3 ½ to 4 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 2–3 tablespoons heavy cream or whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Beat the Butter: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter on medium speed for 2–3 minutes until smooth, creamy, and pale in color.
  2. Add Powdered Sugar: Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating on low speed after each addition to incorporate and avoid a sugar cloud. Once all sugar is added, increase the speed to medium-high and beat for another 1–2 minutes.
  3. Add Flavorings and Cream: Add the vanilla extract, salt, and 2 tablespoons of heavy cream or milk. Beat on medium-high speed for 3–5 minutes until the buttercream is light, fluffy, and smooth.
  4. Adjust Consistency: If the frosting is too thick, add an additional tablespoon of cream. If it’s too thin, add more powdered sugar, ¼ cup at a time, until desired consistency is reached.
  5. Use or Store: Use immediately to frost cakes, cupcakes, or cookies. Alternatively, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Let come to room temperature and re-whip before using.

Notes

  • Perfect for piping and spreading on baked goods.
  • You can substitute vanilla extract with almond, lemon, or other flavored extracts for variation.
  • For a chocolate version, add ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder along with powdered sugar.
