Description

This Onion Beef Fried Rice recipe is a quick and flavorful one-pan meal featuring tender marinated beef, caramelized onions, and fluffy fried rice tossed with savory sauces, peas, carrots, and scrambled eggs. Perfect for a satisfying weeknight dinner that comes together in just 25 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef Marinade

  • 1 lb (450g) beef (such as flank steak or sirloin), thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil

For Cooking

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Fried Rice

  • 2 cups cooked rice (preferably day-old rice)
  • 1/2 cup frozen peas and carrots (optional)
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (for the fried rice)
  • 1 teaspoon oyster sauce (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Marinate the beef: In a medium bowl, combine the thinly sliced beef with 2 tablespoons soy sauce and 1 teaspoon sesame oil. Mix well to coat and set aside to marinate for about 5 minutes.
  2. Cook the beef: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the marinated beef and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until browned and cooked through. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Sauté the onions and garlic: In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add the sliced onion and cook for 4-5 minutes, stirring frequently until the onions are softened and caramelized. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Fry the rice and eggs: Push the onions and garlic to the side of the skillet. Pour the beaten eggs into the empty side and scramble until fully cooked. Then, add the cooked rice, breaking up any clumps with a spatula. Stir everything together to combine the eggs, onions, and rice evenly.
  5. Add sauces and vegetables: If using peas and carrots, add them now and cook for 2-3 minutes until heated through. Then stir in 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 1 teaspoon oyster sauce (if using), 1 teaspoon rice vinegar, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, and salt to taste. Mix well to evenly distribute the seasonings.
  6. Combine with beef: Return the cooked beef to the skillet, and stir everything gently to combine and heat through for 1-2 minutes more.
  7. Garnish and serve: Remove from heat, sprinkle chopped green onions on top for freshness, and serve immediately. Enjoy your delicious onion beef fried rice!

Notes

  • Using day-old rice helps prevent the fried rice from becoming mushy.
  • Feel free to adjust the soy sauce and oyster sauce to your preferred saltiness level.
  • Substitute vegetables based on preference: bell peppers, corn, or mushrooms work well.
  • For a spicier dish, add a pinch of chili flakes or a dash of Sriracha.
  • Make sure the pan is hot before adding the beef to ensure a good sear.
