Description

Delicious and elegant Mushroom and Gruyère Crostini featuring sautéed mushrooms with garlic, thyme, and optional white wine, topped with melted Gruyère cheese on toasted baguette slices. Perfect as an appetizer or party snack with rich flavors and a creamy texture.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread

  • 1 French baguette, sliced into 1/2-inch thick pieces
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil (divided)

Mushroom Topping

  • 1 lb Mushrooms (button, cremini, or a mix), cleaned and sliced
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup Dry white wine (optional)
  • 1 tbsp Fresh thyme leaves (or 1 tsp dried thyme)
  • 1/4 cup Heavy cream (optional, for creamier mushrooms)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Cheese and Garnish

  • 1/2 cup Gruyère cheese, grated
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for toasting the baguette slices and melting the cheese later.
  2. Toast Baguette Slices: Arrange the baguette slices in a single layer on a baking sheet. Brush both sides with olive oil and toast in the oven for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
  3. Sauté Mushrooms: While the bread toasts, heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced mushrooms and cook for 5-7 minutes until they release moisture and start to brown.
  4. Add Garlic and Thyme: Incorporate minced garlic and thyme to the mushrooms, cooking for another 2-3 minutes until fragrant. If using, add white wine and let it reduce for 1-2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Add Cream (Optional): Stir in heavy cream if using and cook for 2 more minutes until the sauce thickens and becomes creamy.
  6. Assemble Crostini: Spoon the mushroom mixture evenly onto the toasted baguette slices, then top each with a generous amount of grated Gruyère cheese.
  7. Melt Cheese: Return the crostini to the oven for 3-5 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Garnish and Serve: Remove from oven, garnish with chopped fresh parsley, and serve warm for the best flavor experience.

Notes

  • White wine is optional but adds a lovely depth of flavor to the mushrooms.
  • Heavy cream can be omitted for a lighter version; mushrooms will be less creamy but still delicious.
  • Use a mix of mushrooms (button and cremini) for more complex taste and texture.
  • To keep crostini crispy, serve immediately after adding mushroom topping and melting cheese.
  • Fresh thyme is preferred, but dried thyme works well if fresh is unavailable.
