Description

Million Dollar Mashed Potatoes are ultra-creamy, rich, and flavorful mashed potatoes made with cream cheese, sour cream, butter, and a touch of garlic. This classic American side dish offers a velvety texture and comforting taste, perfect for holidays, family dinners, or any special occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

Potatoes

  • 4 pounds Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks

Dairy and Fats

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ cup whole milk, warmed
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Seasonings

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Garnish

  • Chopped fresh chives or parsley

Instructions

  1. Boil Potatoes: Place the peeled and chopped potatoes into a large pot and cover them with cold water. Add a generous pinch of salt. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce to medium and let it simmer for 15–20 minutes until the potatoes are fork-tender.
  2. Drain and Mash: Drain the potatoes thoroughly and return them to the pot. Mash the potatoes using a potato masher or hand mixer until they become smooth and lump-free.
  3. Add Creamy Ingredients: To the mashed potatoes, add the softened cream cheese, sour cream, melted butter, warmed whole milk, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir everything together until fully combined and creamy.
  4. Optional Cheese Fold-In: If desired, fold in the shredded cheddar cheese gently, allowing it to melt slightly into the warm potatoes for extra richness.
  5. Adjust Seasoning and Serve: Taste the mashed potatoes and adjust the seasoning if necessary. Transfer to a serving dish and garnish with chopped fresh chives or parsley before serving.

Notes

  • To make ahead: Transfer mashed potatoes to a baking dish, cover with foil, and refrigerate for up to 2 days.
  • Reheat at 350°F (175°C) for 30–40 minutes or until heated through.
  • If the texture is too thick after reheating, add an extra splash of warmed milk to loosen it.
  • Use Yukon Gold potatoes for a creamier texture or Russet for fluffier mashed potatoes.
  • Add extra garlic powder or fresh minced garlic for more pronounced garlic flavor.
