Description

Homemade Apple Thyme Jam is a delightful blend of fresh apples, fragrant thyme, and warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. Sweetened with granulated sugar and set with fruit pectin, this jam is cooked on the stovetop until it reaches a perfect, spreadable consistency. Ideal for breakfast toast or as a topping for desserts, this jam captures the essence of autumn in a jar.

Ingredients

Scale

Fruit Base

  • 4 cups apples, peeled, cored, and finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice

Sweeteners and Pectin

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 package (1.75 oz) fruit pectin

Spices and Herbs

  • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves, finely chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Prepare Apples: Peel, core, and finely chop 4 cups of apples. Place the chopped apples into a large pot to start the jam base.
  2. Add Liquids: Pour in 1/2 cup water and 1/4 cup lemon juice with the apples to prevent browning and balance acidity.
  3. Incorporate Sugar: Stir in 2 cups of granulated sugar evenly into the apple mixture to sweeten the jam.
  4. Add Spices and Herbs: Mix in 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg, and 2 teaspoons of finely chopped fresh thyme leaves to add warm, aromatic flavors.
  5. Bring to Boil: Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring frequently to avoid burning, until it boils.
  6. Mix in Pectin: Once boiling, stir in 1 package (1.75 oz) of fruit pectin thoroughly to help the jam set.
  7. Boil to Thicken: Continue boiling the jam for 1-2 minutes while stirring constantly until it thickens to a jam-like consistency.
  8. Jar the Jam: Remove the pot from the heat and ladle the hot jam into sterilized jars, leaving about 1/4 inch headspace at the top.
  9. Process Jars: Seal the jars with lids and process them in a boiling water bath for 5 minutes to ensure proper preservation.
  10. Cool and Seal: Remove the jars carefully from the water bath and place them on the countertop to cool. Listen for the lids to “pop” as they seal, indicating a vacuum seal has formed.

Notes

  • Use firm, tart apples like Granny Smith for best flavor and pectin content.
  • Ensure all jars and lids are sterilized to prevent spoilage.
  • Adjust sweetness by adding less or more sugar according to taste.
  • Fresh thyme is preferred for the best herbal aroma; dried thyme can be used but in smaller amounts.
  • Do not skip the boiling water bath process for safe preservation and longer shelf life.
