The addition of dark chocolate chips, nuts, and dried fruits adds a delightful touch, making these bars both tasty and health-conscious.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup coconut oil, melted
  • 1/4 cup honey or maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 egg

Add-ins

  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts (optional)
  • 1/4 cup dried fruits (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8×8-inch baking dish with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy removal of the bars.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, thoroughly mix together the rolled oats, whole wheat flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon until evenly combined to create the base mixture.
  3. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk the melted coconut oil, honey or maple syrup, unsweetened applesauce, vanilla extract, and egg until the mixture is smooth and well blended.
  4. Combine Wet and Dry: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir just until they are combined, being careful not to overmix to maintain a good texture.
  5. Add Chocolate and Optional Ingredients: Gently fold in the dark chocolate chips, chopped nuts, and dried fruits if using, distributing them evenly throughout the batter.
  6. Transfer to Baking Dish: Spread the mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish, pressing down gently with a spatula to create a uniform thickness.
  7. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and the center is set but still slightly soft.
  8. Cool and Serve: Allow the bars to cool completely in the baking dish before lifting them out using the parchment paper and cutting into squares or bars for serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute maple syrup for honey to make the recipe vegan, but replace the egg with a flax egg for a fully vegan version.
  • Feel free to customize the add-ins with your favorite nuts or dried fruits.
  • Store bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
  • These bars also freeze well for up to 3 months; thaw before serving.
