Ingredients
Scale
Ingredients:
- 2 cups fresh or frozen strawberries (hulled and halved)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon lemon zest (optional)
- 1 tablespoon water
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the strawberries, sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest (if using), and water.
Stir gently and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the strawberries break down and the mixture thickens slightly. If you prefer a smoother compote, mash the strawberries with the back of a spoon or use a potato masher. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. The compote will continue to thicken as it cools. Serve warm or chilled.
Notes
- You can adjust the sugar to taste depending on the sweetness of your strawberries.
- This compote is perfect over pancakes, waffles, yogurt, ice cream, or cheesecake.
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
