Ingredients
Scale
For the steaks:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
For the gravy:
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 small yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms (optional)
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the meat mixture: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined to avoid tough patties, then shape the mixture into 4 oval-shaped patties.
- Cook the patties: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and lightly grease it or add a splash of oil. Place the patties in the skillet and cook for about 4–5 minutes on each side until they are browned and nearly cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside on a plate.
- Sauté the vegetables: In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add the thinly sliced onions and mushrooms if using, and sauté for 5 to 6 minutes, or until they become soft and translucent.
- Make the gravy: Sprinkle the flour over the softened vegetables and stir continuously for about 1 minute to coat them and cook out the raw flour taste. Slowly whisk in the beef broth to avoid lumps, then add Worcestershire sauce and ketchup. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 3 to 5 minutes.
- Finish cooking: Return the browned patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over each, then cover and reduce heat to low. Let simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the patties to finish cooking and absorb the flavors of the gravy.
- Serve: Serve the Salisbury steaks hot, spooning extra gravy over the top. Ideal accompaniments include creamy mashed potatoes, fluffy rice, or buttered egg noodles.
Notes
- For a leaner alternative, substitute ground turkey or chicken for the beef.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator and often taste even better the next day as flavors meld.
- If you prefer, omit mushrooms from the gravy for a simpler sauce.
