Description

Derby Pie is a classic American dessert featuring a rich, gooey filling of chocolate chips and chopped nuts baked within a buttery pie crust. Infused with a hint of bourbon and vanilla, this southern treat is perfect for special occasions or any time you crave a decadent, nutty chocolate pie.

Ingredients

Scale

Pie Base

  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust

Filling

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon bourbon (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  • pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the pie.
  2. Mix Butter and Sugar: In a mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter and granulated sugar until the mixture is well combined and smooth.
  3. Add Eggs: Add the eggs one at a time into the butter-sugar mixture, beating well after each addition to incorporate fully.
  4. Combine Dry Ingredients and Flavorings: Stir in the flour, optional bourbon, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until the batter is smooth and homogenous.
  5. Fold in Chocolate and Nuts: Gently fold the semisweet chocolate chips and chopped walnuts or pecans into the batter, ensuring even distribution.
  6. Fill Pie Crust: Pour the filling mixture into the unbaked 9-inch pie crust and smooth the top with a spatula to an even layer.
  7. Bake: Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out mostly clean with a few moist crumbs.
  8. Cool: Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool completely on a wire rack to set the filling before slicing.
  9. Serve: Serve each slice plain or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra indulgence.

Notes

  • Bourbon adds a signature Kentucky flavor but can be omitted or substituted with a splash of milk or coffee for variation.
  • Choose either walnuts or pecans depending on your preference for nut flavor and texture.
  • Ensure the pie is fully cooled before slicing to allow the filling to set properly.
  • Use a toothpick test at the baking time’s end to check doneness; some moist crumbs are preferred for gooey texture.
