Ingredients
Scale
Pie Base
- 1 (9 inch) pastry for a single crust pie
Apple Filling
- 2/3 cup granulated sugar
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 4 medium red delicious apples, peeled and chopped
Topping
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/3 cup old fashioned rolled oats
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup salted butter (softened)
To Finish
- 1/4 cup caramel sauce
- Additional caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream for serving (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare Pie Crust: Roll out the pastry to fit a 9-inch deep dish pie plate, folding under or fluting the edges as desired to create a neat rim.
- Mix Apple Filling: In a medium bowl, combine granulated sugar, 3 tablespoons flour, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Add the peeled and diced apples to the mixture, tossing to coat the pieces evenly.
- Assemble Filling: Arrange the apple mixture evenly over the prepared pie crust, spreading the apples out to ensure uniform baking.
- Prepare Topping: In another bowl, combine 1/2 cup flour, light brown sugar, rolled oats, cinnamon, and softened butter. Mix until crumbly and evenly combined.
- Add Topping and Bake: Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apple filling. Place the pie in a 350°F (175°C) oven and bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until the apples are tender. To prevent burning, cover the pie loosely with foil during the last 10 minutes of baking.
- Finish and Serve: Remove the pie from the oven and immediately drizzle the top with 1/4 cup caramel sauce. Let the pie stand for 15 minutes before slicing. Serve warm, optionally with extra caramel sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Notes
- Use firm apples like Red Delicious or Granny Smith for best texture.
- Letting the pie rest before slicing allows the filling to set and improves slicing.
- Covering the edges or using foil during baking prevents the crust from over-browning.
- Adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream complements the warm spices and caramel sauce beautifully.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated and gently reheated before serving.
