Description

This Deep Dish Apple Crisp is a comforting, warm dessert featuring tender cinnamon-spiced apples baked in a flaky pie crust and topped with a crunchy oat and brown sugar crumble. Drizzled with caramel sauce and served best with vanilla ice cream, it’s a perfect treat for autumn or anytime you crave a cozy classic dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

Pie Base

  • 1 (9 inch) pastry for a single crust pie

Apple Filling

  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 4 medium red delicious apples, peeled and chopped

Topping

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup old fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup salted butter (softened)

To Finish

  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce
  • Additional caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Pie Crust: Roll out the pastry to fit a 9-inch deep dish pie plate, folding under or fluting the edges as desired to create a neat rim.
  2. Mix Apple Filling: In a medium bowl, combine granulated sugar, 3 tablespoons flour, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Add the peeled and diced apples to the mixture, tossing to coat the pieces evenly.
  3. Assemble Filling: Arrange the apple mixture evenly over the prepared pie crust, spreading the apples out to ensure uniform baking.
  4. Prepare Topping: In another bowl, combine 1/2 cup flour, light brown sugar, rolled oats, cinnamon, and softened butter. Mix until crumbly and evenly combined.
  5. Add Topping and Bake: Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly over the apple filling. Place the pie in a 350°F (175°C) oven and bake for 35 to 40 minutes or until the apples are tender. To prevent burning, cover the pie loosely with foil during the last 10 minutes of baking.
  6. Finish and Serve: Remove the pie from the oven and immediately drizzle the top with 1/4 cup caramel sauce. Let the pie stand for 15 minutes before slicing. Serve warm, optionally with extra caramel sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • Use firm apples like Red Delicious or Granny Smith for best texture.
  • Letting the pie rest before slicing allows the filling to set and improves slicing.
  • Covering the edges or using foil during baking prevents the crust from over-browning.
  • Adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream complements the warm spices and caramel sauce beautifully.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated and gently reheated before serving.
