Ingredients
Scale
Fruit
- 2 large apples (Fuji, Gala, or Honeycrisp)
Breading
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon milk
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Additional
- Cooking spray or oil mist
- Optional: powdered sugar, caramel dip, vanilla yogurt for serving
Instructions
- Prepare the apples: Peel the apples if desired and slice each into ½-inch thick wedges to create the shape of fries.
- Set up coating stations: Place the flour in one bowl, whisk the egg and milk together in a second bowl to make an egg wash, and mix panko breadcrumbs with cinnamon and sugar in a third bowl.
- Coat the apple wedges: Dredge each apple wedge first in the flour, shaking off excess, then dip it into the egg wash, and finally coat evenly with the cinnamon-sugar panko breadcrumb mixture. Set the coated apple fries aside.
- Preheat the air fryer: Set the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) and allow it to preheat for about 3 minutes. Lightly spray the basket with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Air fry the apple fries: Arrange the coated apple slices in a single layer in the basket, ensuring none overlap. Lightly spray the tops with cooking spray. Cook for 6–8 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the coating is golden and crispy.
- Serve: Remove from the air fryer and serve warm. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar or pair with caramel dip or vanilla yogurt for added flavor.
Notes
- Peeling the apples is optional. Leaving the skin on adds texture and nutrients.
- Choose firm apples like Fuji, Gala, or Honeycrisp for the best texture—they hold their shape well when cooked.
- For extra crispiness, ensure the apple slices are coated evenly and the air fryer basket is not overcrowded.
- If you don’t have an air fryer, these can be baked in an oven at 400°F for 12-15 minutes, flipping halfway, though the texture may differ slightly.
- Serve immediately for best crunch; these fries are best eaten fresh.
