Description

Coffee Jelly is a classic Japanese dessert made by setting strong brewed coffee with gelatin and serving it chilled with a creamy topping. This refreshing and slightly bitter sweet treat is perfect for coffee lovers looking for a light dessert or a delightful iced coffee alternative. With simple ingredients and easy preparation, you can enjoy a sophisticated coffee-flavored jelly dessert in no time.

Ingredients

Scale

Jelly

  • 2 cups strong brewed coffee (or espresso)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 2 teaspoons powdered gelatin
  • 2 tablespoons cold water

For Serving

  • ½ cup heavy cream or sweetened condensed milk (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Bloom the gelatin: In a small bowl, sprinkle the powdered gelatin over 2 tablespoons of cold water. Let it sit undisturbed for 5 minutes to absorb the water and soften.
  2. Heat the coffee mixture: In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the brewed coffee and granulated sugar. Stir continuously until the sugar dissolves completely and the mixture is hot but not boiling.
  3. Dissolve gelatin in coffee: Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the bloomed gelatin until it is fully dissolved and no granules remain.
  4. Set the jelly: Pour the coffee-gelatin mixture into a square or rectangular dish. Let it cool at room temperature for a while before covering and refrigerating it for at least 3 to 4 hours, or until firm.
  5. Serve: Once the jelly is set, cut it into cubes. Serve the coffee jelly cubes in dessert glasses topped with a drizzle of heavy cream or a spoonful of sweetened condensed milk for a creamy finish.

Notes

  • For a dairy-free option, substitute heavy cream with coconut cream or almond milk.
  • Adjust the strength of the coffee and the amount of sugar according to your taste preference for a more or less intense coffee flavor.
  • This dessert is best served chilled and enjoyed fresh.
