Ingredients
Scale
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
Butter and Dairy
- 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 3/4 cup cold buttermilk
Glaze
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 2 tablespoons honey
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt to evenly distribute the leavening agents and seasoning.
- Cut in Butter: Add the cold, cubed unsalted butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture looks crumbly and resembles coarse sand.
- Add Buttermilk: Pour the cold buttermilk into the mixture and stir gently just until a shaggy dough forms. Avoid overmixing to keep the biscuits light and tender.
- Form Dough Layers: Turn the dough onto a floured surface. Gently pat it into a rectangle and fold the dough once or twice to create layers, which will help the biscuits be flaky.
- Cut Biscuits: Flatten the dough to about 1-inch thickness. Use a round biscuit cutter and press straight down without twisting to cut out biscuits, ensuring well-risen edges.
- Arrange on Baking Sheet: Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet so that their edges are barely touching, which helps them rise upwards rather than spread out.
- Bake Biscuits: Bake in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the biscuits are cooked through.
- Prepare Honey Butter Glaze: While the biscuits are baking, melt 2 tablespoons of butter and stir in 2 tablespoons of honey until fully combined to create a sweet glaze.
- Glaze and Serve: Immediately after removing the biscuits from the oven, brush the warm biscuits generously with the honey butter glaze. Let them sit for about 5 minutes before serving to allow the glaze to soak in and the biscuits to cool slightly.
Notes
- Use cold butter and cold buttermilk to help create flaky layers in the biscuits.
- Do not overmix the dough as it can make the biscuits tough.
- Cut the biscuits without twisting the cutter to help them rise evenly.
- For extra flavor, you can brush more honey butter glaze right before serving.
- Biscuits are best served warm but can be reheated gently in the oven.
