Description

This classic Chicken Parmesan recipe features tender, breaded chicken cutlets fried to golden perfection, topped with rich marinara sauce and melted mozzarella cheese, then baked to finish. It’s an easy, comforting Italian-American dish perfect for a family dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken and Breading

  • 2 large boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (Italian-style or panko)
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Sauce and Topping

  • 1 cup marinara sauce
  • 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ cup fresh basil, chopped (optional)

Frying Oil

  • ¼ cup olive oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to prepare for baking the chicken after frying.
  2. Prepare Chicken Cutlets: Slice the chicken breasts horizontally to create four thin cutlets for even cooking.
  3. Set Up Breading Stations: Arrange three shallow bowls – one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with a breadcrumb mixture combined with Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  4. Bread the Chicken: Dredge each chicken cutlet in flour, dip into the beaten eggs, then press into the breadcrumb mixture to coat evenly.
  5. Fry the Cutlets: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the cutlets for 3-4 minutes per side until they are golden brown. Then transfer them to a baking dish.
  6. Assemble: Spoon marinara sauce over each fried cutlet and sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese on top.
  7. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Garnish and Serve: Optionally garnish with fresh chopped basil. Serve hot with pasta or vegetables.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, use panko breadcrumbs instead of Italian-style.
  • Chicken cutlets should be pounded to an even thickness if not sliced evenly for uniform cooking.
  • You can substitute marinara sauce with homemade tomato sauce for a fresher taste.
  • Use fresh mozzarella for a creamier texture if preferred.
  • Leftover Chicken Parmesan reheats well in the oven or air fryer to maintain crispiness.
