Ingredients
Scale
Dough
- 1 pound pizza dough
- All-purpose flour, for dusting
Cheese Filling
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
Finishing
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- Marinara sauce, for dipping
Instructions
- Preheat Oven & Prepare Sheets: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line two large baking sheets with parchment paper to prevent sticking and to ensure even baking.
- Prepare Cheese Filling: In a medium bowl, thoroughly mix shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheeses to create a flavorful cheesy filling for the breadsticks.
- Roll & Cut Dough: On a lightly floured surface to prevent sticking, roll out the pizza dough into a 12×16 inch rectangle. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the dough into 12 to 16 strips approximately 1 to 1.5 inches wide each.
- Fill & Seal Breadsticks: Spoon about 1½ to 2 tablespoons of the cheese mixture onto one half of each dough strip. Fold the other half over the cheese and pinch the edges very firmly to seal the cheese inside and prevent leakage during baking.
- Shape into Bones: Gently roll each sealed dough strip into a cylindrical shape about 6 to 8 inches long. Use your fingers to pinch and indent both ends creating two ‘knuckles’ and taper the middle to resemble a bone. Place each shaped breadstick bone on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them 1 to 2 inches apart for even baking.
- Brush & Bake: Lightly brush the tops of the breadstick bones with melted unsalted butter to enhance browning and flavor. Bake in the preheated oven for 18 to 22 minutes, rotating the baking sheets halfway through for even cooking, until the breadsticks are golden brown and puffed.
- Serve: Remove the breadstick bones from the oven and immediately brush with any remaining melted butter for extra richness. Serve warm alongside your favorite marinara sauce for dipping to enjoy a delicious and festive appetizer.
- Storage: Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. To reheat, place them in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 5 to 7 minutes for best taste and texture.
Notes
- Ensure the dough edges are sealed tightly to prevent cheese from oozing out during baking.
- You can customize the cheese filling by adding herbs like garlic powder or Italian seasoning for extra flavor.
- If pizza dough is not available, refrigerated bread dough or homemade dough works as a substitute.
- Serve immediately for the best texture; reheated breadsticks may be slightly less crispy.
- These breadsticks freeze well before baking; freeze shaped sticks on a sheet then transfer to a freezer bag. Bake from frozen adding a few extra minutes to baking time.
