Instructions
- Heat Skillet: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat, preparing it for cooking the sausage and vegetables.
- Brown Sausage: Add the Cajun sausage to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it into smaller pieces with a spatula for even cooking.
- Add Vegetables: Add the chopped onion, red bell pepper, and green bell pepper to the skillet, enhancing the flavor and texture of the dish.
- Sauté Vegetables: Cook the vegetables for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they become slightly softened.
- Add Garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute to release its aroma.
- Toast Rice: Stir in the long-grain white rice and cook for 2 minutes, allowing the rice to toast slightly and develop a nutty flavor.
- Add Liquids and Seasonings: Pour in chicken broth, diced tomatoes (with their juices), Cajun seasoning, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper.
- Combine Ingredients: Stir well to blend all ingredients evenly throughout the skillet.
- Boil Mixture: Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat to begin cooking the rice.
- Simmer: Reduce heat to low, cover the skillet with a lid, and let it simmer for 20-25 minutes until the rice is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed.
- Remove from Heat: Take the skillet off the heat once the rice is cooked through.
- Rest: Keep the skillet covered and let it sit for an additional 5 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
- Garnish: Sprinkle chopped green onions over the dish to add freshness and color before serving.
- Serve and Enjoy: Serve hot and enjoy your savory Cajun Sausage and Rice Skillet!
Notes
- You can substitute the Cajun sausage with smoked sausage or andouille sausage for a similar flavor.
- Adjust the Cajun seasoning amount to control the spice level.
- For a spicier dish, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or hot sauce.
- Ensure the skillet is tightly covered during simmering to cook the rice properly.
- Leftovers store well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheat easily.
