Description

These Awesome Blossom Onion Bites are a crispy and flavorful appetizer that will be a hit at any gathering. The sweet onion petals are coated in a seasoned batter and fried to perfection, resulting in a delicious snack that pairs perfectly with your favorite dipping sauce.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Onion Bites:

  • 1 large sweet onion
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Ranch or spicy dipping sauce for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Onion: Peel the onion and cut into bite-sized petals or chunks. Soak the onion pieces in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes to tenderize and enhance flavor.
  2. Prepare the Batter: In a separate bowl, combine the flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and cayenne if using.
  3. Fry the Onion Bites: Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350°F. Remove the onion pieces from the buttermilk, dredge in the flour mixture, and fry in batches for 2–3 minutes until golden brown.
  4. Serve: Remove the fried onion bites, drain on paper towels, and serve hot with ranch or your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For extra crunch, double-dip the onion pieces by repeating the buttermilk and flour steps.
  • Best served fresh but can be reheated in the oven or air fryer.
