Description

This Authentic Beef and Broccoli Stir Fry recipe delivers a flavorful and tender Asian-inspired dish perfect for weeknight dinners. Thinly sliced beef flank steak is marinated to enhance tenderness, then quickly stir-fried with crisp broccoli and optional colorful vegetables like carrots and red bell peppers. The savory sauce made with coconut aminos, garlic, and aromatic sesame oil coats everything perfectly, offering a healthy and satisfying meal that pairs beautifully with steamed rice.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef and Marinade

  • 1 – 1.2 lb Beef Flank Steak or steak tip, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp coconut aminos (for marinade)
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tbsp arrowroot flour

Vegetables

  • 1/2 head broccoli (~1 heaping cup florets)
  • 1/3 cup carrot slices (optional)
  • 1/4 cup red bell pepper slices (optional)
  • 1 clove garlic, minced

Sauce

  • 1/3 cup coconut aminos
  • 1/4 cup water or beef stock
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1/2 tbsp arrowroot flour

For Stir-Frying

  • 1/4 cup cooking oil, divided

Instructions

  1. Marinate the Beef: In a bowl, combine the thinly sliced beef with 2 tablespoons of coconut aminos, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, and 1 tablespoon arrowroot flour. Mix well to coat the beef evenly. Let it marinate for at least 30 minutes to tenderize and infuse flavor.
  2. Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl, mix together 1/3 cup coconut aminos, 1/4 cup water or beef stock, 1 tablespoon rice vinegar, 2 teaspoons sesame oil, and 1/2 tablespoon arrowroot flour. Stir well and set aside.
  3. Cook the Vegetables: Heat half of the cooking oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté briefly until fragrant. Add the broccoli florets and carrot slices (if using) and stir-fry until they become tender-crisp, about 4-5 minutes. Then add the red bell pepper slices (if using) and cook another 1-2 minutes.
  4. Cook the Beef: Push the vegetables to one side of the skillet. Add the remaining cooking oil to the empty side, then add the marinated beef slices. Sear the beef until nicely browned on all sides, about 3-4 minutes, stirring frequently.
  5. Add the Sauce: Reduce the heat to medium-low and pour the prepared sauce over the beef and vegetables. Stir continuously to evenly coat everything and let the sauce thicken slightly, about 1-2 minutes.
  6. Serve: Remove from heat and serve immediately over steamed rice. Optionally, garnish with sesame seeds or chopped green onions for added flavor and presentation.

Notes

  • Thinly slicing the beef against the grain ensures tenderness.
  • Baking soda helps tenderize the beef quickly; do not skip marinating time.
  • Arrowroot flour acts as a gluten-free thickener, can be substituted with cornstarch if desired.
  • Coconut aminos provides a soy-free alternative to soy sauce, but regular soy sauce can be used.
  • Vegetables like carrots and bell peppers are optional but add color and nutrition.
  • Serve immediately for the best texture and flavor; leftovers may become soggy.
