Stenciling is super easy to do and will add such an amazing amount of detail to your cake. You can do it on the top of a cake, the sides of a cake, on cupcakes, etc. It can be done on buttercream or fondant/gumpaste. For purposes of this tutorial I will be discussing stenciling on fondant or gumpaste. I recommend practicing this technique on a scrap piece of fondant or gumpaste before you do it on a cake.
Materials:
- Stencil
- Fondant or gumpaste
- Palette knife
- Rolling pin
- Royal icing
1. Roll out your fondant or gumpaste and lay your stencil on top.
2. Hold the top of your stencil with one hand and spread royal icing over the stencil. Scrape of your excess royal icing. Also, make sure to not lift your knife up while spreading the royal icing. This will help ensure a flawless even coat.
3. You now have your completed design!
Stenciling also looks great on bows!
****Special Note**** If you’d like to stencil on buttercream, allow your buttercream frosted cake to crust for a few hours or even over night. Then follow the above directions.
